SaidHost down

Posted by Rob at March 5th, 2007

It’s typical this. I just got a server from Saidhost.com on Feb 21st. Then around Feb 22 or Feb 23 SaidHost.com went down. I didn’t even get chance to get it configured and running :(

From what I’ve been able to piece together Level 3 disconnected them from thier network. Saidhost had 2 network bandwidth suppliers. One supplier TELCOVE http://www.telcove.com/ was bought out by their other supplier Level 3 http://www.level3.com/.

Level 3 had been complaining about violations of their AUP (Acceptable Use Policy). They finally got fed up with the contstant violations and shut off the network fee for Saidhost. To me it looks like Saidhost had sold a server to someone who was using it to send out massive amounts of spam. When Saidhost failed to stop the abuse Level 3 just cut them off.

www. is deprecated.

www. is deprecated.

How many times a day you goto a web address and forget to put the www? How many times does the site come up? Do we really need to make people type in www. ?

Is this a ruse by the keyboard makers to wear out the w key faster?

URL Redirect

Posted by Rob at February 26th, 2006

How to do URL redirect in frames with path forwarding.

Get this CGI script and save it in your cgi-bin directory

#!/usr/bin/perl
##
## redirect.cgi -- Program to frame redirect to another server
##

print "Content-type: text/html\n\n";

$uri = $ENV{'REQUEST_URI'};
$host = $ENV{'HTTP_HOST'};
$destbase = "http://www.stonhamhosting.net";
$dest = $destbase.$uri;

print "

<body>
The website for $host can be found by clicking <a href=\"$dest\">here</a>.
$host is registered though <a href=\"http://stonhamhosting.net/\">StonhamHosting - get web site hosting here</a>
</body>

“;

Then add this to your .htaccess in the top level directory of you web site:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^(.*)       cgi-bin/redirect.cgi

Weblog Tools Collection 30GB Web Mail Launches Into Beta

How can anyone afford to do something like this? Even a huge company like Google can only manage about 2.5Gb worth of free storage. Come on guys level with us. I very much doubt that 30Gigs.com will be able to offer 30Gb to every user. But to honest how many of use GMail users are anywhere near our limit? Not many I bet. So for the few people who do use the full 30Gb there will be a few hundred other people using less than 1Gb.
